Nearly half a billion animals including mammals, birds, and reptiles have lost their lives in the fire blazes in New South Wales alone, and around 30 percent of the koalas’ habitat has also been wiped out. What does climate change have to do with the fires?
Now you might wonder if we had hands in causing such a horrific incident, well climate change did and we’re partially to blame.
Australia is familiar with firestorms, it’s actually how trees release their seeds. However, this season’s fires have gone wild and not as usual. Weather conditions have been feeding the fires and aren’t helping it calm down, on December 18th for instance Australia reported its hottest day ever as it reached 40.9 degrees Celsius!
Firestorms are not new to Australia. It’s typically hot and dry, similar to conditions in California or the Mediterranean. Eucalyptus forests in Australia have a unique relationship to fire; the trees actually depend on fire to release their seeds.
This is quite alarming and is a wake up call for all of us especially after the fires that recently broke in the rainforest! We will pray for rain but should also pray for an action…
